Cisco 7000 Series Routers - 7301, 7304, and 7401

Introduction to the 7000 line: The Cisco 7000 series is a economical, and powerful entry among Cisco's modular router lines.With the exception of the 7301 and 7401, these are highly modular routers in which even the CPU and IO cards are modular. In some of the lines, the CPU cards are referred to as NPE (network processing engine cards), in others - RSP (route switch processors), and in others SUP card (supervisory engines). The Cisco 7301 – Economical Gigabit Functionality In A Modular 1U Router
The Cisco 7301 is an integrated, modular router using the same technology as the 7206VXR –including its most sophisticated and advancedThe Cisco7301 - Click for full sized image. In short, the 7301 has a built in NPE that combines features of the NPE-G2 and NPE-G1 (1 million-packets-per-second (Mpps) processing performance and three RJ45 copper/SFP GBIC gigabit interface ports, and integrated IO functions), plus a port adaptor (PA) expansion slot supporting most PA cards used in the 7206VXR, so the 7301 can be adapted to virtually any use. In addition, its integrated design makes it much smaller (1U), lighter (only about 15 lbs) and less expensive than an equivalently provisioned 7206VXR. The Cisco 7401 is similar in appearance to the 7301. It is a 1U router with a single PA slot, with a 300-kpps processing capability and an NSE-100 type , and 2 GBIC interfaces instead of the 3 gigabit SFP interfaces in the 7301. The Cisco 7304 - Cisco describes the Cisco 7304 as follows: "The compact, modular Cisco 7304 Router is designed for the network edge where high performance IP/MPLS services are required to enable profitability, service differentiation, and business agility. The 7304 thus has a modular CPU board - the NSE-100 or NPE-G100 - that includes IO functions. The Where the 7206VXR has PA slots, the 7304 has SPA slots. They require a special carrier card, and nearly all regular PA cards used in the 7206VXR, as well as a new line of SPA cards, can be installed.
