AS5400 "XM" Released |
Cisco has released the latest in its
AS5400 line - the AS5400xm. The AS5400 now comes in three types - the
original AS5400 with a 250 mhz processor, the HPX with a 400 mhz
processor, and the new XM - which at 750 mhz is triple the speed of the
original, and adds built-in 10/100/1000 ethernet ports in place of the
10/100 ports found in the original and HPX versions. An AS5350xm version
with similar features has also been released. Which is right for your
application? My general rule of thumb
for VOIP applications is that the original AS5400 is fine up to about
400 ports for most normal VOIP applications. The HPX is fine up to the 648/CT3 level if doing H.323
origination/termination, but for SIP, high complexity codecs, or to get the best performance at
higher density levels, consider the new XM.

AS5350 versus AS5400
Which One's Right For
You?
Many service providers think of the
AS5350 as the "little brother" of the AS5400 - both in terms
of price and performance. But this perception is wrong on both counts.
The 5350 and 5400 actually share the same processing power and mainboard,
and differ in expansion slots and power supply options. Virtually all AS5400s
come with dual power and all come with 7 expansion slots, compared with
single power and 3 slots on the AS5350 (dual power is available, but
quite expensive and often unavailable). In general, the
bigger AS5400 chassis makes for a more expensive bundle at the 2E1, 2T1,
and 4T1 level. But anything above that - beginning with the 4E1/120,
begins to favor the 5400 - principally because the greater number of
expansion slots make possible the use of less expensive PRI cards to
provision the unit. So, instead of the 1 expensive 4E1 card needed to
make a 4E1/120 port unit in the AS5350, 2x2E1s make a much more
affordable unit, and at anything above four PRIs, the savings from this
approach usually outweighs the chassis price difference. Moral?
If you're looking for 4E1s or more, or more than 4T1s in a unit, think
carefully about an AS5400 before dismissing it as too expensive.

Patton's VOIP/IPTV Appliance |
Patton's innovative
SmartNode
VOIP/IPTV Appliance offers a
sophisticated, low-cost, lightweight 1U design coupled with integrated support. Weighing less than five pounds,
and so efficient it doesn't even require a fan, this tiny unit
effectively manages up to 120 ports of H323/VOIP voice and IP video traffic. The SmartNode has a built in web
interface, 2 year
manufacturer warranty, and lifetime Patton technical support and software
upgrades (making total cost of ownership far less than for most other
similar products). Its tiny footprint and low power consumption make it
especially useful for deployment as a VOIP/IPTV appliance in
distributed locations. To learn more about the SmartNode's
capabilities and technical details, visit

The AS5300 - Still Chugging
Along
It's been out of
production for a couple of years, but for dedicated dialup or VOIP
service, it's a hard value to beat...
Cisco 7204/7206 - Basic
Features.
So
what are the differences between the 7204, the 7206, and their VXR
and non-VXR versions? Are the VXR units worth the price? And what
about all those cards - NPEs, IOs, and PAs? We take them all on in
December's edition.
Off The Beaten Path
Some amazingly low cost,
high-quality nonCisco alternatives for dialup and VOIP access remain widely
available (if often unnoticed). We'll help you identify possible
hidden values that may have promise for your own organization.
